Chesapeake Chamber Music’s YouthReach Program began in the 2006-2007 school year to provide elementary school children in Talbot County, MD with a beginning string music experience called First Strings. In the 2008-09 school year, it was expanded geographically to Dorchester County, MD. This year the program Presto was established for children wanting to go beyond First Strings.
YouthReach also presents concerts for students in both counties as an outgrowth of the annual Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival.
The short-term goals of First Strings and Presto! are to improve listening, self-confidence, creativity, cooperation and self control, and to have fun while teaching the skills needed to play an instrument.
The long-term goal of this and the Children’s Concert is to awaken young people’s interest in, and ultimately love for, the classical music art form.
